Canva is a popular graphic design platform that is known for its user-friendly interface and its wide range of features that allow users to create stunning designs for a variety of purposes.
One of the features that Canva offers is the ability to add captions or subtitles to a video. This is an important feature, especially for videos that are intended for social media, where many users may be watching videos without sound.
Follow the steps below to add captions/subtitles to a video in Canva:
Step 1: From the Canva home page, click “Videos” & select your choice of video format. For this tutorial, we have selected the available default video format.
Step 2: Now add a video to which you want to add subtitles/captions. We have added one of the pre-licensed videos available in Canva’s video library.
Step 3: Add a text box to the video by clicking on the “Text” option from the left side editor panel. Change the font style, size, etc., from the top toolbar, as shown in the below screenshot.
Step 4: Add the required subtitles into the text box. And to ensure the subtitles are visible, adding a background colour to the text is good.
To add a background, select the text box and click on the “Effects” option at the top toolbar. From the list of “Style” effects, choose the “Background” effect, as shown below. Make necessary changes to the background, like colour, roundness, spread, etc., from the options available.
Step 5: The subtitles keep changing as the video progress. We need to split the video into multiple pieces to add all the subtitles precisely as they should appear in the video.
At the bottom of the screen, where you can see the video thumbnail, hover the mouse and select the position where you want to add a new subtitle.
Once you pinpoint the video position to split, right click and select the “Split page” option, or directly press the letter “S” after the right click. Observe the above screenshot for a better understanding.
Step 6: Check the below screenshot to understand how the video appears after the split. You can see that the subtitle text box remained the same in both video parts.
Step 7: Now, you need to select the subtitle text box on the second part of the video and write the subtitle text according to that portion.
Step 8: Now repeat the process of selecting the video position and splitting it into multiple pieces until you finish adding subtitles to the entire video.
This is how the final video with subtitles appears after you complete adding them to all the video parts.
This might be a time consuming & tedious task if your video is lengthy and has a lot of subtitles to be added. However, currently, there is no direct option to generate subtitles for your video in Canva.
Adding captions or subtitles to a video is an important step in making your content more accessible to a wider audience. By using Canva’s text box, you can create engaging captions and subtitles that enhance the viewing experience of your videos.
