The text background feature in Canva allows you to add a background color to the text in your design, making it stand out and adding visual interest. With this feature, you can choose from a wide range of background colors, or even create your own custom background color.
Follow the steps below to add background color to a text box in Canva.
Step 1: Open a blank Canva design and add a text box to which you want to add a background color. Or open an existing design like the one we have opened here for the purpose of this tutorial.
Step 2: Select the text box to which you want to add color, and then click on “Effects” option available at the top side toolbar. You now see all the styles available under the “Effects” option on the left side of your canvas. One of the options under ‘Style’ would be “Background” – as highlighted in the below screenshot.
Step 3: Once you select the “Background” option, you will be able to see all the customization options available under it, such as Roundness, Spread, Transparency, & Color.
Roundness is the circular effect on the background color at the corners of the text box. Spread is the amount of background color that is spread beyond the rectangle of the text box. Transparency is the amount of opacity that you can adjust to the background color you have selected. Lastly, you have the option to change the color of the background text.
In the below screenshot you can see how the text background appears when we select values of roundness and spread as zero. Plus we have changed the background color.
Now you have a text box in your design with the background color of your choice added to it.
If your text box has multiple lines of text, then the text background color appears as color fill, and not as a background color as shown in the below screenshot.
It remains the same even when you increase the line spacing between the text lines. This may not look good in some cases.
To fix this, you need to duplicate the text box and make both the text lines as different text boxes as shown in the below screenshot.
With this trick, your design looks good, and you will also have an option to choose different background colors for both the text boxes if required.
Hope this tutorial helped you easily understand how to add background color to a text box using the “Background” option available in the “Effects” feature.
